What is the role of a compost turner in organic fertilizer production?

2026/10/14

Aerobic fermentation is the core process of organic fertilizer production. As the central equipment in the fermentation stage—often referred to as the "heart" of the production line—the compost turner directly determines the degree of material decomposition, the production cycle, and the quality of the finished fertilizer; it is an indispensable piece of equipment for large-scale organic fertilizer production. Huaqiang Heavy Industry offers one-stop services for organic fertilizer projects, ranging from process planning to equipment supply, helping enterprises ensure stable production.

The primary function of a compost turner is to replenish oxygen within the compost pile, thereby maintaining the activity of aerobic microorganisms. Raw materials such as livestock manure and crop stalks tend to compact over time, creating an oxygen-deprived environment inside the pile where anaerobic bacteria proliferate; this not only slows down material decomposition but also generates foul-smelling gases like hydrogen sulfide, polluting the environment. During operation, the compost turner turns and aerates the material, increasing porosity and allowing air to fully penetrate the pile. This maintains an aerobic environment, activates beneficial microorganisms, accelerates the decomposition and conversion of organic matter, and prevents the pile from emitting foul odors.
Secondly, the compost turner plays a key role in temperature and moisture control. Microbial fermentation continuously releases heat, and pile temperatures can exceed 70°C; excessive heat can kill beneficial bacteria and halt the fermentation process. Regular turning dissipates accumulated heat, stabilizing the temperature within the optimal range for fermentation. Simultaneously, it evaporates excess moisture, maintaining the water content within the ideal 50%–60% range to ensure steady, continuous fermentation. Turning also eliminates insect eggs, pathogens, and weed seeds present in the raw materials, achieving harmless treatment of the material.
Mixing and crushing are also important functions of the compost turner. The turning process thoroughly mixes manure, stalks, and fermentation inoculants, balances the carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio, breaks up clumps, and eliminates "dead zones" in the fermentation process. This ensures the entire batch of material decomposes uniformly, preventing incomplete fermentation in localized areas. Compared to traditional manual turning, mechanized windrow turning significantly reduces labor costs, shortens the fermentation cycle, and boosts production capacity.
From an environmental perspective, the proper use of a compost turner minimizes odor emissions and reduces the impact of production on the surrounding environment, thereby facilitating the resource recovery and recycling of livestock manure and agricultural waste. Without the use of a compost turner, the fermentation cycle is prolonged and decomposition becomes uneven, often resulting in a finished product that can cause "root burn" in crops.
In summary, the compost turner integrates oxygen supply, temperature control, moisture adjustment, and material mixing/pulverization, supporting the safe, large-scale production of organic fertilizer. Selecting the right equipment and properly managing turning frequency are essential for consistently producing high-quality organic fertilizer and fostering the sustainable development of ecological agriculture.
