The horizontal mixer (also known as the horizontal ribbon mixer) is one of the most common mixing devices in the field of industrial powder processing. Its core structure consists of a U-shaped vessel and internal double-layer counter-rotating helical blades (ribbons); utilizing a unique convective mixing mechanism, it plays an indispensable role in industries such as chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, construction materials, and new energy materials.

What are the structural components of a horizontal mixer?

A horizontal mixer primarily consists of four main parts: a U-shaped vessel, a ribbon-style mixing system, a drive assembly, and a discharge mechanism.

The vessel typically features an elongated U-shaped design, with its inner walls polished to minimize material flow resistance and residue buildup. Some models are equipped with an external jacket that allows for the circulation of heating or cooling media, thereby meeting temperature control requirements during the mixing process.

The mixing system is the core of the equipment. The mixing shaft is fitted with double or triple helical blades—commonly referred to as "ribbons"—where the inner and outer ribbons feature opposing helical directions. The outer ribbon conveys material from the ends of the vessel toward the center, while the inner ribbon moves material from the center toward the ends. This bidirectional flow design is the key feature that distinguishes ribbon mixers from other types of mixing equipment.

The drive assembly generally comprises a motor, a gearbox, and a coupling; it is mounted at the end of the unit to drive the mixing shaft at a relatively low rotational speed. The discharge outlet is usually located at the center of the vessel's bottom, positioned to facilitate rapid material discharge in conjunction with the rotation of the ribbons.

Working Principle of the Horizontal Ribbon Mixer

The working principle of the horizontal ribbon mixer is straightforward, yet the underlying fluid dynamics logic is worth explaining clearly.

Once the equipment starts, the motor drives the mixing shaft to rotate via a gearbox, causing the inner and outer ribbons mounted on the shaft to turn. Because the inner and outer ribbons have opposing helical directions, the material within the mixing vessel undergoes two simultaneous, counter-directional movements: the outer ribbon gathers material near the vessel walls from both ends toward the center, while the inner ribbon pushes material near the shaft from the center toward both ends.

The combined effect of these opposing movements creates a vigorous convective circulation of the material within the vessel. The material not only moves back and forth along the axial direction (the length of the vessel) but also undergoes radial tumbling and shear mixing. In short, the material is continuously turned, intermixed, and blended throughout three-dimensional space, rather than simply undergoing a single circular motion as seen in some other types of equipment.

What are the key performance characteristics of horizontal mixers?

Overall, ribbon-type horizontal mixers offer several notable features:

High loading coefficient and excellent space utilization. The loading coefficient can reach 0.4 to 0.7, allowing for the processing of larger volumes of material within the same footprint. The horizontal design also results in a lower machine profile, facilitating installation and maintenance.

Broad material adaptability. Mixing performance is minimally affected by particle size or density, and the mixer delivers excellent results even with cohesive or sticky powders and granules. It handles a wide range of applications, from dry powders to pastes, and from powder-powder to powder-liquid mixing.

Stable operation and relatively low energy consumption. Forward- and reverse-rotating ribbons are mounted on the same horizontal shaft, ensuring balanced power consumption during operation. The smooth mixing process also minimizes mechanical damage to the materials.
