The straw crusher is a crucial piece of equipment in the process of modern agricultural mechanization, used to shred and process agricultural waste stalks such as those from corn, wheat, cotton, and soybeans.

Working Principle of the Straw Crusher

The straw crusher can be powered by an electric motor or a diesel engine. The main unit consists of a feeding mechanism, a cutting mechanism, a discharge mechanism, a transmission system, a mobility system (wheels/chassis), safety guards, and the frame. Its core operation involves three stages:

Feeding and Cutting Stage

Material enters the crushing chamber via the feeding mechanism, where a cutter roll or hammer assembly rotates at high speed (typically 1,000-3,000 rpm) to perform the initial cutting of the straw. The feeding mechanism primarily comprises a feed table, upper and lower feed rollers, a stationary blade, and a stationary blade mount.

Hammering and Shredding Stage

Once inside the crushing chamber, the straw undergoes further size reduction through the impact, striking, and friction forces generated by the high-speed rotating hammers or cutter rolls. Taking a hammer-type shredder as an example: hammers are mounted on a rotor; as the rotor spins at high speed, centrifugal force drives the hammers to strike and shatter the straw entering the chamber.

Screening and Discharge Stage

The shredded material falls through a screen; material that does not pass through the screen openings undergoes repeated shredding until it is fine enough to pass through and be discharged from the machine. The screen is interchangeable to allow for particle size adjustment.

The overall machine structure typically includes a feeding device, a crushing chamber, a power system, and a screening device; some models utilize variable-frequency motors, resulting in lower energy consumption compared to traditional equipment.

Application Areas of Straw Crushers

Straw crushers have a wide range of applications.

In organic fertilizer production, straw can be combined with livestock and poultry manure to produce organic fertilizer.

Regarding returning straw to the field, shredding and incorporating corn straw can reduce chemical fertilizer input by 20–30 kg per mu and increase soil organic matter by 0.3%–0.5% annually.

In feed processing, shredded straw can be used as livestock feed.

In the biomass energy sector, shredded straw can be used to produce pellet fuel.
