Which Raw Materials Are Used to Produce Organic Fertilizer?

2026/11/03

Clients planning to establish an organic fertilizer processing plant often ask first: what raw materials are needed? The selection and combination of raw materials directly determine the success of the fermentation process, the organic matter content, and the quality of the final product; they form the foundation of the entire organic fertilizer production line. Raw materials for organic fertilizer are generally categorized into four types: primary materials, conditioning additives, functional microbial inoculants, and performance-enhancing additives. A well-balanced mix is essential for stable fermentation and the production of commercial organic fertilizer that meets industry standards.

Livestock and poultry manure—such as chicken, cattle, sheep, or pig manure—serve as the primary raw materials. Chicken manure is nutrient-rich and heats up quickly during fermentation, but its high moisture content can lead to compaction if used alone. Cattle manure has a loose texture, offers good aeration, and ferments more moderately. Sheep manure, characterized by high organic matter content and few impurities, is highly valued in the market. These materials are rich in nitrogen and serve as the main source of nutrients for organic fertilizer; however, they must be fully decomposed (composted). Using raw, undecomposed manure can cause "root burn" in plants and promote the proliferation of pests and pathogens.
Agricultural waste serves as an important carbon source and conditioning material. Common examples include corn stalks, wheat straw, rice husks, peanut vines, spent mushroom substrate, herbal medicine residue, and distillers' grains. These materials have a high carbon content and are primarily used to adjust the carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio—ideally to a range of 25:1 to 30:1—while also improving the aeration of the compost pile and reducing the moisture content of the manure. Straw should be shredded before use, and the compost pile should be turned regularly using a crawler-type windrow turner to supply oxygen and accelerate the decomposition process. Oilseed cakes (such as rapeseed or soybean meal) are high in protein and can enhance the quality of the organic fertilizer; they are frequently used in the formulations of high-end bio-organic fertilizers.
Conditioning agents and functional microbial inoculants are also indispensable. Microbial inoculants are key to initiating the composting process; adding specialized decomposing strains can shorten the fermentation cycle, reduce odors, and ensure that harmful pest eggs and pathogens are effectively inactivated. Humic acid, peat, and lignite are frequently used to increase organic matter content, enhance the color of the final product, and improve its water and nutrient retention capacity. Small amounts of calcium and magnesium-based materials can be added to adjust the pH of the compost pile and optimize the fermentation environment. Organic fertilizer production lines from Huaqiang Heavy Industry support the blending of various raw materials; once fermentation is complete, the material can be processed through a flat-die pellet machine to produce granular organic fertilizer, which is convenient for storage and transport.
When selecting raw materials, it is crucial to be mindful of safety thresholds. Materials such as industrial sludge, substances with excessive heavy metal content, and untreated municipal solid waste are strictly regulated and must undergo testing and evaluation before use. It is advisable to prioritize locally sourced materials with a stable supply to minimize transportation costs.
In summary, the production of organic fertilizer is not merely the fermentation of a single raw material, but rather a scientifically formulated blend—combining primary nitrogen-rich materials with carbon-rich additives, supplemented by microbial inoculants. By selecting the right raw materials, carefully controlling the mixing ratios, and utilizing appropriate turning and granulation equipment, one can consistently produce high-quality organic fertilizer, thereby transforming agricultural waste into a valuable resource.
