As the name implies, the hydraulic roller granulator is a forming machine that utilizes a hydraulic system to generate extrusion force, pressing powdered materials into granules of specific shapes via two counter-rotating rolls. Unlike standard double roller machines that rely on springs or mechanical screws for pressure, the hydraulic system provides more stable and controllable extrusion force, enabling the equipment to easily process hard-to-form materials, such as those that are rigid or fibrous.
This equipment operates via a dry granulation process; it requires no added moisture or binders and eliminates the need for subsequent drying, resulting in a streamlined workflow and significantly reduced overall energy consumption. The finished granules—typically irregular flattened spheres or flakes—exhibit high strength and resistance to pulverization, making them ideal for use as commercial organic fertilizers, compound fertilizers, or specific chemical raw materials.
Its core operational process can be summarized in three steps: forced feeding, high-pressure extrusion, and demolding/forming.
After being metered, the material enters the main unit, where a screw or rotary feeder forces it into the arc-shaped grooves of the two rollers. This step ensures the material is pre-compacted and air is expelled prior to extrusion, preparing it for high-pressure forming.
This is the most critical step. The two rollers rotate toward each other; one roller is subjected to immense, constant, and adjustable thrust provided by a hydraulic cylinder. Under linear pressure ranging from several tons to tens of tons, the material is instantly compressed into a dense sheet or forced directly into the grooves (or pockets) on the roller surfaces to form granules. The hydraulic system’s unique "overload protection" feature allows the roller to automatically retract when encountering unbreakable hard objects, preventing damage to the roller surface—an advantage that spring-loaded models cannot match.
The formed granules rotate out of the nip zone and are released via gravity or with the aid of a scraper. The discharged material passes through a granulator to break up large chunks, followed by classification via a vibrating screen; qualified granules enter the finished product bin, while fine powder is recycled for re-extrusion.
The hydraulic roller granulator is highly versatile and particularly effective for processing the following types of materials:
Various organic fertilizer raw materials: Such as decomposed livestock and poultry manure (chicken manure, cattle manure), distillers' grains, medicinal residues, mushroom substrate residues, etc. These materials often contain fibers; the hydraulic system provides sufficient pressure to forcibly extrude and shape them, overcoming the challenge of fiber spring-back.
Inorganic minerals and chemical raw materials: Such as potassium fertilizers, phosphate fertilizers, calcium-magnesium-phosphate fertilizers, silicon fertilizers, bentonite, activated carbon, etc. For these materials—which have high specific gravity and are difficult to wet with water—dry extrusion is the most efficient forming method.
Compound and blended fertilizers: Used to produce formulated fertilizers (such as high-nitrogen or high-potassium types) or customized fertilizers enriched with secondary and trace elements.
Specialized materials: Such as the pre-compression and densification of biomass particles (sawdust, straw), as well as the forming of certain pharmaceutical intermediates and catalysts.
Key parameters to note: Material moisture content should generally be controlled between 3% and 8%, and particle size should be reduced to below 10mm via pre-crushing to ensure optimal forming results.
A single granulator cannot complete the production process on its own; a complete dry extrusion granulation line comprises three main sections—pretreatment, forming, and post-treatment—and the equipment configuration can be streamlined based on the factory's production capacity.
Raw material conveying equipment: Belt conveyors, bucket elevators
Batching and mixing system: Automatic batching system, horizontal mixers
Crushing equipment: Crusher
Core unit: Hydraulic roller granulator
Screening equipment: Drum screener
Finished product packaging: Automatic packaging machine
